Tulsa Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Natural Raccoon Deterrents
Raccoons are found in urban and suburban areas. If you are residents of these communities, you have seen raccoons going through garbage cans. These wild animals go for in search of food or places where they can easily find food. These raccoons are a threat to you and your family. They are carriers of rabies and virus. They are also dangerous for pets.
Here I am sharing a few homemade raccoon deterrent ideas; these ideas will naturally deter raccoons.
Onion and Pepper repellent
Raccoons don’t like the smell of onion and pepper scent; this will keep raccoons away from your home. Take two tablespoons of cayenne pepper, one jalapeno pepper, and one chopped onion now mix it with a half-gallon of water. Boil this mixture and steep it for twenty minutes. Remove the pepper and onion; pour this liquid into a spray bottle. Spray this liquid around your yard and garden; around trashcans, this will keep raccoons away from garbage. The smell of this onion pepper liquid will fade after a few days, or after rain for better results, you should spray this mixture two times a week.
Sprinklers
Raccoons don’t like being around water. Therefore, motion-activated sprinklers are the best way to get rid of raccoons. If sprinklers are on during different times of the day, this will help to keep raccoons away, but this method is wasteful and expensive as water is becoming precious every day. This is not an environment friendly and cost-effective way; motion-activated sprinklers are best for this purpose. Motion-activated sprinklers will only work when they notice any motion.
Use Ammonia
Ammonia can help you keep raccoons away from your home. Ammonia soaked rags can be placed near the raccoon nest, near the entrance of raccoons. You can spray ammonia inside trash cans and near the areas where you have seen raccoon lingering.
Use mothballs
Raccoons are very sensitive against strong odor. To keep raccoons away from home, you can put mothballs or any household products. This method can work against raccoons, but you need to regularly replace these products. Mothballs can be toxic and can have negative effects on pets and kids.
Using predator’s urine
If you noticed raccoons around your house, just go to local sporting goods store and purchase predator’s urine and spray it near trash cans, rear yard entrance, and around your garden. This trick will make raccoons think that there is a predator nearby, and they will get scared. You should look for wolves, bobcats, and lions urine.
Decoration lights
You can also use decoration or Christmas lights to scare the raccoons. Just install these lights near entry point or in the yard and keep them on.
Professional Trapper Services
You can get help from professional trapping services to get rid of raccoons. This is an expensive method, but this is the quick and safest way. Pest control experts will use traps to trap the raccoons. The benefit of using professional trapper service is that they are licensed to deal with the wildlife.
